Certified Ophthalmic Assistant Practice Exam

COA is the entry point of a ladder, not a standalone credential. IJCAHPO structures allied ophthalmic certification in tiers, Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) first, then Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), then Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT), plus several specialty credentials beyond those three. COA is where nearly everyone starts.

The exam: 200 multiple-choice questions, taken in person at a Pearson VUE testing facility. Content spans four areas: basic science, clinical principles and procedures, ophthalmic patient services and education, and administrative knowledge.

IJCAHPO rebuilds its exam content roughly every five years based on research into what allied ophthalmic personnel actually do day to day, so the test reflects current practice rather than a static syllabus. If your study materials are more than a few years old, it's worth confirming they still match the current task-based content categories.

IJCAHPO cites a real productivity argument for the credential itself: roughly four out of five ophthalmologists surveyed agree that certified allied ophthalmic personnel make their practice more productive, and studies have shown certified staff contribute more to efficiency and quality of care than non-certified staff.
